Global coronavirus cases pass 372,000

Global coronavirus cases have now passed the 372,000 mark. And the number of deaths now stands at 16,300. Global coronavirus cases continue to rise while governments are adopting more stringent measures every day. The World Health Organization (WHO) is keeping a close eye on the situation unfolding around the world.

In the face of the rising virus threat, Hong Kong introduced new controls. The city is now battling a new wave of infections. Therefore, they banned all foreigners and non-residents from entering the city. Hong Kong is just one country in Asia that adopted strong measures this week to curb the spread of the virus.

However, on the other side of the globe, the US keeps delaying passing an economic stimulus package to help battle the surging number of cases in the country. A necessary Senate vote has been pushed back. And, it appears the Senators are having trouble reconciling their political differences to address the growing pandemic in the country.

Throughout the pandemic Japan kept faith that it would be able to host Olympics 2020. But, for the first time since the outbreak, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has realized that Olympics games will have to be postponed. A number of countries have declared that they would not send a team even of games were held as scheduled. And, this includes Canada.

Therefore, Japan’s dream of hosting what is known as one of the world’s most prestigious sporting event this year seems to have been shattered. As global coronavirus cases increased, Japan was not spared either. However, PM Abe was reluctant to call a cancellation of the long-planned event. Yet, today he has decided to call for a cancellation.

India decided to lock down 75 main regions in the country, including the capital New Delhi, in a move to curb the surging global coronavirus cases. The lockdown will be effective until March 31. The central government is taking tough measures against people gathering in public places. Accordingly, now it is a punishable offence for four people or more, to gather in one place.

Also, Australian Prime Minister requested citizens to close down non-essential businesses. And, he urged them to temporarily halt domestic travels. Australia’s coronavirus cases are now over 1000.

New Zealand too is on high alert now with the rising number of cases there.
