Can asymptomatic people spread coronavirus?

The question in the mind of many is whether asymptomatic people spread coronavirus. The majority of the coronavirus cases detected around the world appear to be asymptomatic. But then, if they don’t show any symptoms, can they spread the virus to another person?

Coronavirus is a highly contagious virus that can spread really quickly from one person to another. The World Health Organization (WHO) has already warned of a number of ways that the virus can be spread.

Quite alarmingly, the virus can not only spread through the air but also can survive on hard surfaces for about 28 days. But, now the question is can asymptomatic people spread coronavirus?

What is asymptomatic?

Being asymptomatic means laboratory-confirmed patients who do not display any known symptoms of the coronavirus. Medical professionals have listed a long list of possible coronavirus symptoms. The more severe ones are; the difficulty to breathe, high fever, dry cough and body aches.

Apart from these, there can be many other minor symptoms such as headaches, loose bowel movements and muscle pain.

However, there are a number of confirmed coronavirus patients who do not display any symptoms at all. On the outlook, they look healthy individuals. But, without knowing, they carry the debilitating virus in their bodies. Only a lab test can confirm whether they have been infected with the virus or not.

They are tested for being first-level contacts of a corona positive patient.

Why some people don’t show symptoms?

Now, the question is why some people are asymptomatic in the first place? One explanation is that some of these patients may have partial immunity in their bodies. This is partly because they may have been exposed to other viruses in the coronavirus family. It could even be a common cold. Sometime’s our cells can retain a ‘memory’ of such virus.

One other reason could be childhood vaccinations. Those who had been vaccinated as a child had a low prevalence to catch the coronavirus. Even those who had received the pneumonia vaccines recently have created strong resistance to the new virus.

Some scientists believe that wearing masks can make you an asymptomatic case. As in, if you wear masks among coronavirus positive cases, your chance of being exposed to the fully-blown virus is pretty low. Instead, you would only contract the virus, but will not suffer its harmful effects.

Can symptomatic people spread coronavirus?

The scientific community is divided on this. Some believe that whether you are symptomatic or asymptomatic, you can spread the virus equally to those around you. Then there are some who believe that asymptomatic cases become infection-free after about seven to ten days. But then, there are some who believe they cannot pass on the virus at all.

This is a relatively new virus. The scientific community is still studying its effects. Therefore, whether you are healthy, asymptomatic or symptomatic, it is always better to take precautions and follow the advice of healthcare professionals.
