In the ancient past people didn’t even have names for infectious disease such as chicken pox, measles, mumps or small pox. And, they called them devil’s diseases because they appear from nowhere, no medicines can cure them. And, as mysteriously as they appear, they just disappear too.

What the ancients believed were some basic, simple methods to just ward them off.

Turmeric – This is a super spice. Turmeric has many uses in the South Asian cuisine. It can give a curry a specific flavor, color and aroma. In Ayurveda, turmeric is also used as a germ killer. Also, it is customary in many South Asian households to sprinkle turmeric water inside and around the houses and business places to keep away germs.

The main active ingredient in turmeric, known as curcumin is scientifically proven to kill cancer cells. An, it is also an antioxidant.

Coriander – This is a time tested spice than can keep many diseases away. Coriander seeds can be roasted and then boiled to brew a tea-like drink. Therefore, many in South Asia have a habit of drinking coriander tea to boost immunity.

It is full of antioxidants that can stop cellular damage due to free radicals. Also, it is scientifically proven that coriander can fight inflammation of the body. On the other hand, tests have proven that these little seeds can slower the growth of many types of cancer, such as breast, prostate and colon cancer cells.

What is this ‘perumkayam’?

When the coronavirus started spreading around the world, people in South Asia started looking for a seemingly magical herb. Its botanical name is Ferula foetida. Its English name is Asafoetida. But, in Sanskrit it has many different names. However, it is mostly known as Hingu. Sri Lankans know it as perumkayam.

This herb is popular in Ayurveda to treat respiratory illnesses. Coronavirus mostly affects the respiratory system. Therefore, many started looking for Ayurvedic secrets that can fight off viruses. This is one of them.
